Featuring a defined mihrab (prayer niche) composition, “Mihrab-ı Nur” (Mihrab of Light – Turkish) is a rare hand-knotted prayer rug woven in the early-to-mid 20th century. The pointed arch of the mihrab is set within a saturated burgundy-red field, symbolizing divine devotion, while stylized motifs resembling mosque architecture and hanging lamps emphasize its liturgical character. The richly decorated spandrels and borders showcase symbolic forms such as ram’s horns (heroism, strength), tulips or rosettes (paradise, renewal), and abstract bird motifs, associated with spiritual messages. The navy-blue border with gold, saffron, and beige contrasts brings visual depth and balances the sacred core with an earthly frame.
Hand-knotted using the Ghiordes knot, Mihrab-ı Nur is woven with resilient wool on a cotton foundation and made with natural dyes derived from plants.
