This hand-knotted Yahyalı rug, “Sol Invictus” (Unconquered Sun – Latin) has a sharply defined, diamond-shaped central medallion anchoring the composition, featuring stepped geometric contours and an internal motif resembling a stylized ram’s horn, emblematic of strength and masculinity. The deep crimson red field contrasts strikingly with the surrounding indigo panels and ochre-toned main border, which is filled with repeat patterns of stars and additional ram’s horn forms, all steeped in protective and spiritual symbolism. The border’s angular meanders and hooked motifs are consistent with protective themes, while the star-like flowers suggest celestial guidance or joy.
Sol Invictus is hand-knotted using the Turkish traditional Ghiordes symmetrical knot, constructed with high-grade wool on a wool foundation, known for its luster and dye absorption, and dyed with natural plants or roots.
