The “Tessera” (Ancient Tile – Latin/Greek) is a bold and expressive hand-knotted piece woven in the village of Büyük Bürüngüz. Rare with a pronounced geometric structure and vibrant palette, Tessera reflects the robust design language of Anatolian village traditions. The stepped, multilayered medallion in the center is defined by angular motifs, diamond accents, and stylized botanical hints. The spandrels in muted green and ochre frame the composition with jagged mountain-like contours. Wide, multi-band borders feature hooked forms, acting as talismanic protectors and water-like zig-zag lines, symbolizing life’s continuity. Subtle floral and rosette-like figures suggest themes of abundance and cyclical growth.
Tessera is crafted using the traditional Ghiordes knot with hand-spun wool pile and a cotton-wool foundation and dyed using natural plants and roots.
